Pricing is a people game disguised as a numbers game.

We often look for analytical skills in Pricing professionals, and rightly so. Pricing requires someone who understands data, elasticity, margins, customer behaviour and the commercial impact of different decisions.

But being analytically strong is only part of the job.

Most Pricing Managers face a fundamental challenge: they are expected to influence some of the most important commercial decisions in the organisation, without necessarily having the formal authority to make those decisions themselves.

Sales has its targets.
Finance has its margins.
Marketing has its positioning.
Management has its priorities.

And those interests do not always point in the same direction.

Pricing therefore has to do more than provide the right analysis. It has to bring different perspectives together and turn analytical insight into decisions that people across the organisation are willing to support and execute.

Having the right answer isn’t enough. You need people to come with you.

That requires credibility, communication and influencing skills. It means understanding the commercial reality of Sales, being able to challenge Finance, working with Marketing and explaining complex Pricing decisions in a way that makes sense to senior management.

But there is also a simpler, sometimes underestimated factor:

People need to like working with you.

Not because Pricing should avoid difficult conversations. Quite the opposite. Strong Pricing professionals need to challenge assumptions, say no when necessary and sometimes push for decisions that are uncomfortable in the short term.

But challenging people is much easier when you have already built trust and credibility with them.

How important these skills are will differ by company, industry and level of Pricing maturity. In a highly centralised Pricing organisation, formal decision rights may be stronger. In other organisations, influence and stakeholder management can be just as important as analytical expertise.

Ultimately, successful Pricing is not about producing the perfect model or spreadsheet. It is about changing commercial decisions and, eventually, behaviour.

Behaviour rarely changes because of the spreadsheet alone.
